Pilot Training

The Auckland Gliding Club is fully committed to the training of its members, from the pre solo pilot just starting out in gliding, to an experienced solo pilot wishing to explore the world of (for example) aerobatics.

Instruction is provided by Gliding New Zealand qualified instructors and is free of charge. The instructors provide their time out of a love for the sport. All you pay for is the glider hire and the cost of the launch. See the fee schedule for details.

Training Lessons should be flown as often as you able to make the time available. The more frequent your visits to the airfield for tuition are, the easier it is to build on the knowledge gained from previous lessons and the faster you will learn. On any particular flying day we operate on a first-come-first-served basis, so the student that arrives early is assured of an adequate number of flights that day. In the glider used for your training the instructor will sit behind you and have a full set of duplicate controls. How long it will take you to solo depends on a number of factors. These might include any previous pilot experience, how open you are to your instructor's guidance and how relaxed you are.

Once you are able to fly the glider solo yet another world will open for you. The great thing about gliding is that it has so many levels. The competitive pilot has various goals from badge flights to records and keenly held contests peaking in the world championships. The following is a typical Training Syllabus that a new glider pilot would follow on joining the club. The purpose of which is designed to make your advancement incremental and is tailored to ensure you learn at a pace that is right for you.

Receipt of a "Starter Pack" which contains your new Log Book for recording flight activity, Training Notes, Training Syllabus for recording your progress. Your personal Training Syllabus is an important record of the training you have received. And as you will probably be training with a number of different instructors over time, allows the instructor to asses your level of progress.

Ground Training. This introduces you to the club operations and rules. Also a familiarisation with the airspace in which you will be flying. And to the physical aspects of the trainer gliders used for primary training.

A Certificate Training.
This introduces you to the practical aspects of glider flight. The ability to safely fly the glider in favourable conditions is learnt. You will probably fly the majority of your flights by being launched via the winch. This launch method is considerably more economical than an aero tow. As the emphasis is on as many take offs and landings (circuits) as possible, it is often the preferred option. Your instructor will ensure that you have mastered the necessary skills to fly a glider on your own and it is in this phase of your training that you will fly your first solo ! On completion of all the items in this training syllabus you will be awarded your "A Certificate".

B Certificate Training.
Whilst you are now cleared to fly a glider solo, there is a lot more to be learnt. During this aspect of your training you will learn some of the skills necessary for thermal soaring, spin recovery and more advanced handling situations. Consolidating this learning with airtime is what will sharpen your skills and will internalise what you have been exposed to, allowing you to move on to the next phase. On completion of all the items in this training syllabus you will be awarded your "B Certificate".

Qualified Glider Pilot Training.
This aspect of your training prepares you for cross country soaring and all the associated requirements for that. Some focus items are airborne navigation, airspace and maps, weather appreciation and outlanding considerations and practical training for outlandings. It is here that some theory is introduced and exams need to sat for Meteorology, Air Law, Airmanship & Navigation, Technical Knowledge, Human Factors, Radio License. These are not difficult to achieve and the Chief Flying Instructor (CFI) arranges for classes at the clubrooms for student groups that are close to being ready to sit for these exams. On completion of all the items in this training syllabus you will be awarded your "QGP". This is glidings equivalent to the power world's PPL.

Advanced Training Syllabus.
This aspect of your training opens up the world of badge flying, competition flying and aerobatics. Aimed primarily at advancing your cross country and competition skills this is where you start choosing which aspect of gliding appeals to you most. Do you wish to fly locally, does cross country flying appeal, does competition flying take your fancy, or badge flying where you achieve individual goals that are recognised internationally. A whole world of options to suit everyone awaits !
